From 1861-1879 (during the Qing Tongzhi period), there are two ways the cake was named after the top scorer in the Imperial Examination, both meaning good luck: one is because the cake was used as a gift and all exam candidates brought it with them to ensure good luck; the other is because on the 15th day of the first Lunar month, there was a lantern festival in southern China, where people ate fire-baked cakes as midnight snacks, called "Shangyuan Cake."

Zhaoyuan cake, also known as "Shangyuan cake" and "fire-baked cake," used to be a popular snack during the lantern festival on the 15th day of the first lunar month in Jinze town, where people would party all night long. They often bought the cake made by Wan Changsheng shop as a midnight snack, thus called Shangyuan cake. In the local dialect, "Shangyuan" has the same pronunciation as "top scorer in the Imperial Examination." To ensure good luck, exam candidates would bring this ancient yet convenient snack with them while taking exams, thus called "Zhaoyuan cake."
